We have been on a coaching (god help me) holiday to Scotland over the past week. I wasn't completely looking forward to it as I hate coaches and feel a bit nauseous whenever I am on them, this was compounded by the free bar at the hotel for 3 hours each night. But I was very surprised as we had a really good time, even with the Mother-in-Law tagging along, well OK, it was originally her and First Born's holiday but me and Wifey tagged along. We were staying in Arrochar, a little village 30 minutes north of Glasgow and on the banks of Loch Long. We were ferried around to different places each day and plied with free food, drink and (what can only be loosely called) entertainment each night.
The first full day we were there, we went to Inveraray, a beautiful little spot on the banks of Loch Awe. From there we were dragged over to the coast to Oban. The second day was much the same were we first went to the very misty venue for Noel Edmonds last marriage, Luss, were we actually saw these men mending the gravestones. It doesn't get more real than that! Next was a quick stop off in Callander followed by a trip through the Trossachs where there is some truly amazing scenery. We even saw the castle (time-share) they used to film Colditz.
The last day we had the day off from the coach and went for a trek in Arrochar in anticipation for Whiskey Mac. No not the rather warming whiskey/ginger wine concoction, but the rather cheesy cabaret singer on at the hotel that night. He started in a tuxedo doing all the usual swing numbers, but then in a bit of a surprising turn of events, he came on for his second act in the full Elvis Presley/Las Vegas jumpsuit mode for some of the Kings classics before returning, schizophrenic like, in the tux for the final few numbers. How odd! The old folk loved him though and some even bought his CD. I couldn't quite bear to part with my little Scottish fiver though.
On the whole I would recommend the whole holiday, just make sure you take your car.
